IT Service Vision Software: Macro Reference, Release 2.3
Published in Paperback by SAS Publishing (25 August, 2000)
Author: SAS Institute
Average review score:

Complete, comprehensive concordance of macros
This 570 page book is a concordance of IT Resource Management (formerly called IT Service Vision) macros, and a compendium of additional information, including batch job troubleshooting, error messages and data archiving.

Each of the macros are described in detail, and the macros are grouped by function (administration, reports, and data dictionary and control).

The audience for this book is limited to systems programmers who will be developing and implementing IT Resource Management solutions in the data warehouse, and assumes the use of SAS products in the environment. If you are seeking a more basic book that introduces IT Resource Manager you will want to read "Getting Started With It Service Vision: Release 2" (ISBN 1580259146), which is less technical and will provide a better overview of features and how to use them at the user and data warehouse administrator levels.

Japan's Financial Crisis and Its Parallels to U.S. Experience (Special Reports (Institute for International Economics (U.S.)), 13.)
Published in Paperback by Institute for International Economics (October, 2000)
Authors: Adam S. Posen and Ryoichi Mikitani
Average review score:

Super run through of Japan's malaise
Recently, Adam Posen (an influential US monetary economist)has written some really good stuff on Japan's economic problems. It was his name on the cover that persuaded me to buy this book.

If you want a rich and in depth - in some parts academic - account of why Japan is struggling then this is for you. There are four themes...1) the origin of Japan's banking problems 2)comparisons of Japan's banking problems and the US S&L crisis 3) political problems faced by those who wish to see the BOJ adopting very loose money and 4) how the BOJ's monetary policy can be adapted to these exceptional circumstances and used to promote a sustainable recovery.

If you read this and Posen's previous books on Japan you'll be well equipped to understand what is wrong with the world's second largest economy. The only weak area is the treatment of fiscal matters. Those are largely ignored, even though fears of government bankrupcty weigh heavily on the financial markets.

Japan's Foreign Policy After the Cold War: Coping With Change (Studies of the East Asian Institute)
Published in Paperback by M.E.Sharpe (April, 1997)
Authors: Gerald L. Curtis and Michael Blaker
Average review score:

All aspects of Japan's foreign policy
This book is an excellent source for most aspects of Japan's foreign policy. It is an excellent place to start when researching the policy orientation of Japan. The sections are broken up into diplomatic style, economics, securiy, regional relations, and new trends. Unlike other books which deal with only a particular field, usually economics, Curtis makes sure to combine all aspects of Japan's foreign policy. However, in its quest to be all-encompasing it is is still hihg-quality and each section is written be specialists in that particular field. The author's of the individual articles are elequent and make cogent arguments with excellent data to back their assertions. Overall, this book is a must read for anyone curious about Japan's foreign policy or even an "expert" in the field.

The Jimmy Fund of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (September, 2002)
Author: Saul Wisnia
Average review score:

True Heros
Anyone whose life has been touched by cancer will appreciate this wonderfully chronicled journey of "true heros" in the fight against cancer. From Dr. Sidney Farber's early successes in achieving temporary remission in pediatric patients to the long-standing support from the Boston Braves (now Boston Red Sox) that helped make "The Jimmy Fund" a household name.
The vivid collection of pictures takes you through the half a century of support from sports stars and celebrities who came to visit Dr. Farber's clinic and his patients. Ted Williams' quiet devotion to The Jimmy Fund Clinic's young patients is heartwarming, and his public support brought about much needed attention and funding.
In looking at these early photos of children at The Jimmy Fund Clinic, you realize that sadly many of them died from their disease. Today, because of Dr. Farber, and the support from so many who continue to support New England's favorite charity, cure rates for certain children's cancers have reached over 80 percent. The author did a tremendous job in assembling the vast selection of photos, which alone, tell quite a story.

JMP Start Statistics
Published in Paperback by Brooks Cole (13 July, 2000)
Authors: John Sall, Ann Lehman, Lee Creighton, Sas Institute Inc, and SAS Institute Inc.
Average review score:

Very informative
If you use JMP and need something to fill in the statistical details omitted in the user manuals, then this is the book for you.

I have used JMP for a while, and with a basic knowledge of statistics it is a useful tool. It got to the stage where I knew that JMP was capable of doing alot more analysis than my limited knowledge of statistics would let me understand. I could get the software to carry out all manner of analyses, I just didn't always understand what the output was telling me. The book "JMP Start Statistics" starts right at the beginning and takes you all the way through to things such as multiple regression, design of experiments and statistical quality control, all the while explaining the statistics in a clear and concise manner. This book will definitely help you get more out of JMP than just the manuals, which tend to assume you already have a statistics background, would.

Jodo Shinshu: Shin Buddhism in Medieval Japan (Institute of Buddhist Studies)
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (May, 2002)
Author: James C. Dobbins
Average review score:

Excellent analysis of the development of Joudo Shinshuu
The book provides detailed and profound information on the development of the Joudo Shinshuu sect of Japanese buddhism, which is the biggest of Japan's buddhist sects today and also the one whose beliefs arguably bear the most resemblance to those of Christianity. The orthodox view of Joudo history held by the members of the sect itself is covered as well as the "historical" view through the eyes of the scholar. The important - that is to say unique - parts of the Joudo belief are covered in detail, especially the process of the establishment of Amida as a kind of saviour whose mercy paves those who rely upon him the way to rebirth in the Pure Land - in sharp contrast to other sects of buddhism, which focus upon satori (enlightenment) through one's own efforts - mainly meditation (jou), study (e) and the strict observance of the rules for buddhist monks (kai). The evolution of Joudo belief and organization from the time of its founders Hounen and Shinran through the middle ages is also looked at in detail.

Overall a convincing analysis of this interesting Japanese sect by a renowned scholar, aiming at an audience of scholars and people interested in facts and solid argumentation instead of mainstream esoteric ballyhoo.

Judaism in a Secular Age: An Anthology of Secular Humanistic Jewish Thought (Library of Secular Humanistic Judaism)

Shopping Around
I had always thought of myself as Jewish, always celebrated the holidays with my parents at home. But then I was bat-mitzvah age and suddenly I didn't want to go to synagogue and memorize hebrew texts. I wanted to do something more meaningful to myself. And so we, as a family, shopped around. We spent hours at libraries and read countless books about Jewish heritage and the religion, finally stumbling upon Secular Humanistic Judaism. It fit us exactly. We think of Judaism as our heritage and religion, though in a modern scientific age we'd given up believing in the Bible literally. One line in the introduction of this book states something like, 'Our God does not care whether or not we eat tuna with mayo.' And we agree wholeheartedly. So if you're looking to understand these new movements of Judaism, beyond reformed, I recommed this book. It traces the history of the movement through powerful Jewish thinkers and writers of the centuries. I encourage you to explore, find what Judaism means to you, to shop around.

Justice in the Church: Gender and Participation (Michael J. McGivney Lectures of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on mArriage and Family, 1992)
Published in Hardcover by Catholic Univ of Amer Pr (November, 1996)
Author: Benedict M. Ashley
Average review score:

Excellent study of the role of women and men in the Church!
Fr.Ashley has produced a well-documented and thoughtful book on the roles of men and women in the church, discussing what true justice is, what participation in the life and happenings of the Church really means, and defenses for the prohibition of women to the sacrament of Holy Orders. Clearly, he has taken this issue very seriously and has done considerbale research in the area. The bibliography alone is amazing. While the work presents the reader with familiar issues, he explores a few new dimensions and contributes what I feel to be a significant aspect of gender and participation in the Church, namely the subject of what it means to be an active, "participating" member of the Church as a man or woman and the necessity of maintaining fidelity and "justice" to God's plan for the Church. Very interesting and worthwhile!

Kate Chopin: A Critical Biography (Publications of the American Institute, University of Oslo.)
Published in Hardcover by Octagon Books (June, 1980)
Author: Per Seyersted
Average review score:

Extremely helpful and informative
Seyersted's work is so concise and to the point; I used this book for an English term paper on Kate Chopin and was extremely impressed by Seyersted's writing. I give this book five stars because I adore Kate Chopin's work (so I love the content), I envy Seyersted's detail, and also because this book helped me immensely in writing my term paper. Mr. Seyersted, wherever you are, thank you so much!
